The Falcons were able to extend their Mid-American Conference winning streak to four as they came from behind to beat Akron 3-2 and downed Buffalo 3-1 on the road this weekend.
In the opening set at Akron, BG was able to stay with the Zips the whole set despite hitting .038 as a team. With the score tied at 23, the Zips were able to win the first set on two straight kills.
In the second set, BG was able to the turn match around as they only trailed twice and won the set, 25-21.
In a closely contested third set Akron was able to pull out another two-point victory as neither team had more than a two-point lead all set. Eventually, Akron was able to win the match, 30-28.
"We just weren't very consistent against Akron," said BG assistant coach Mark Hardaway. "We were just giving up strings of points on errors. I remember at one point they had eight points, six of which were our fault."
The Falcons were once again able to rebound and come back and win the fourth set, 25-20, on the strength of an early seven-point run with sophomore Alex Zlabis behind the serving line. The fourth set win forced a fifth-and-decisive set.
In the fifth set, Akron was able to take an early 8-7 lead, but a kill by senior Meghan Mohr sparked a five-point run in which Mohr recorded four kills. The Falcons eventually won the set 15-9 on a kill by Kaitlin Jackson.
Offensively, BG was lead by sophomore Corey Domek who was one of three Falcons with double-digit kills. Domek had a team-high 17 kills while sophomore Sam Fish recorded 50 assists.
"Sam did a nice job mixing up the offense," Hardaway said. "She did a good job getting our hitters one-on-ones and even some open net shots."
Following BG's win over Akron the Falcons headed to New York to match up with the Buffalo Bulls.
BG was dominant in the first two sets, as they held the Bulls to under a .250 hitting percentage in both sets and only allowed Buffalo to score more than three consecutive points or more twice.
