COLUMBUS - The State Highway Patrol has recommended firing 12 officers for cheating on a test on equipment used during drunken driving arrests.
An Ohio Inspector General report in July found that a trooper made copies of an exam on operating the equipment that tests breath and helps determine blood alcohol content.
Yesterdays recommendations involve troopers and sergeants. Most had been assigned to the Canton post.
The cases go before a hearing officer Friday at the patrol's district headquarters in Massillon. Names of those involved are being withheld pending that hearing.
Lawyer Herschel Sigall, for the Ohio State Troopers Association, says the union will challenge at least some of the allegations based on lack of evidence of cheating.
