The BG women's golf team was one of only 12 teams to stick around for the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University, as four teams dropped out prior to the competition on account of inclement weather conditions.

Plagued by sleet and snow, the Falcons' chalked up an 8th place finish overall, with two athletes finishing in the top 20.

"Conditions weren't ideal but in the Midwest this time of year you have to be mentally prepared … I think we are as mentally tough as they come," said BG Coach Stephanie Young.

The tournament, originally set to be a 16 team field, dropped down to 12 teams as Western Kentucky, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois and Cincinnati withdrew from competition.

In the first round of the 36 hole tournament, seniors Jessica McCann and Carley Hrusovsky led the way with a pair of 80's. McCann turned in a 42 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine, while Hrusovsky shot a 41-39, which set them tied for 22nd place heading into round two.

Consistency was key for the team in holding steady over the two day event.

With a 36-hole score of 656 (327-329), the team was able to maintain its 8th place position after round one.

"We definitely were consistent - still a little shy of where we want to be but we have a lot of time yet with two tournaments ahead of us," Young said.

Round one's top performers continued to pace the team in the final 18 holes as McCann carded a 156 (80-76) good for 11th place and Hrusovsky a 160, putting her in a tie for 20th place.

McCann was only one stroke away from placing in the top ten and was also tied for the fourth lowest round of the day.

"I think with four seniors we have a lot of senior leadership and we rely on them a lot - and they've been there done that and they know what we need to do to be successful," Young said of her top senior performers.

Also competing for BG were Lauren Glew 172, tied for 50th place, Lindsey Jonkhoff and Amanda Bader, who both shot 173's tying them for 52nd place.

Freshman Marisa Glew also competed in the event as an individual as her scores were not counted in the overall team score, carding a 171 good for 49th place.

"I think Marissa is right there, she has a lot of potential to be successful as a Falcon.

"We are very excited on how [she] competed in this tournament," Young added.

The Falcons' will host their own tournament, the Falcon Invitational, April 21-22 at Stoneridge Golf Club.

"For us to be able to host an event and having four seniors is something we are definitely looking forward to," Young said.
