Film Preview: "Prom Night"
By: Joe Cunningham
Issue date: 4/11/08 Section: Film Previews
This week's big release in theaters is "Prom Night," yet another film in the seemingly endless line of remakes of old school horror flicks, and like nearly all of the films like it, this film has no chance whatsoever of being even halfway decent.
The story follows pretty much every trait associated with the genre, killer comes back to finish what he started years earlier on a night that happens to coincide with some event, in this case the night of the senior prom of his main target, of course. The only difference is that the intended victim this time around is played by Brittany Snow, a first timer to the horror genre.
With a first time director and a screenwriter who has barely any experience as well, especially when they are dealing with a cast made up almost entirely of unknowns is not what one would consider to be the recipe for success.
There has to be some veteran leadership involved at some level for a film to be successful, unfortunately producers like to sacrifice using this formula in lieu of reducing costs to make a movie cheap and line their own pockets. The movie going public has seen this again and again in recent years, and it looks like it will continue on, thankfully there are some legitimate producers out there that can give us hope for the occasional movie going experience that is worth the price of admission,
There is nothing worth seeing in "Prom Night". Poor writing, no direction, and furthermore, no stars with the ability to make us miss either of those major faults. There has to be some other alternative than spending ten bucks and an hour and a half on this piece of junk.
