Want to be student government president? Be our guest
Issue date: 3/21/08 Section: Forum
A "student's bill of rights." Fixing potholes. Getting students interested in the Undergraduate Student Government.
These are some of the ideas we heard from the candidates for president and vice president at Tuesday night's candidate forum. Everybody's rushing to get their names and faces out before the week-long elections that begin Monday.
Perhaps we're just cynical, but all of this sounds like a broken record. The student government president always wants to do great things during the campaigns, and winds up making only a few great speeches.
And they wonder why no one really knows what USG is, who the members are or why they should care?
Heck, two of the candidates think USG's most important issue is getting its own senators interested in what USG has to do.
Ugly stuff.
So, candidates, here's your chance.
We want to know why we should elect you. Send The BG News a guest column telling us why students should care abut you, what you have to offer and how you're going to actually get something done.
Only around 15 people showed up to your debate, so you still have another 14,985 or so to persuade.
We want it by noon on Monday so it can print in our Tuesday issue. That leaves plenty of time for students to read, decide and vote.
Be sure to read the instructions for guest columns at the bottom of the page. Sorry for the quick turnaround, but sometimes that's the way things go.
And keep in mind, this is a one-day event. We won't print anything after Tuesday, so you have a chance to prove whether you can get things done on time.
You might wonder, why are we asking you in this space?
Well, now everybody knows what to look for. They know to see whether the people who are supposed to represent them care enough to give them the time of day.

Way to go BGNews! I'm one of the canididates and I welcome this opportunity. I'm glad you called us out on this. If this is what it takes to help USG, then so be it. (Continued…)
